RESISTANCE TO TYRANNY

“Resistance to Tyranny is Obedience to God” was a patriotic motto during the American Revolution. But what did it really mean and where did it come from? While it is often traced either to Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson, in reality it was first said to be coined by John Knox, during the time of the Reformation. The original teaching was that because Christ is King of kings, therefore, all the rulers of the earth have a duty to govern in obedience to God.

If kings resist the commandments of the Almighty, then the servants of God must resist them. Its purpose was not to incite rebellion against the government, but rather, to encourage a Biblical worldview, in which the common people seek to obey God rather than men. Understanding the original intent of the phrase leads us back to the Great Protestant Reformation and demonstrates that the core principles of what would become the free world have their foundation in the Bible and the Christian faith.
