THE HIDDEN FAITH OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS is perhaps the first and only documentary to go where no film has ever gone before, confronting the little-known private beliefs of some of America’s key founding fathers. There is no doubt this film stirred up much debate upon its release.
While our ministry has always acknowledged that America has a Christian foundation going back to the earliest colonies, there can be no question that at least some of the revolutionaries held to doctrines that were, at the very least, unorthodox in nature. Some conservative historians would have us believe that virtually all of the revolutionaries were devout Christian men; but what did figures such as Jefferson, Adams and Franklin really believe? What about Thomas Paine? While their political views could be defended as variant forms of “political
Protestantism” (to quote Samuel Adams), their theology was often a disaster, and their private letters reveal the truth to anyone who cares to examine them.
The real questions are: What did some of the key revolutionaries believe about Jesus Christ? Christianity begins with faith in the Person of Christ Himself, and so this documentary explores the opinions recorded in the private letters of some of the leading figures during the period of the American Revolution. What did they think of the Gospel? While we certainly accept that they fought to uphold the political principles of Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights, that is not the question here. Our concern is this: when it comes to the teachings of the
Gospel, were they fighting for Christianity, or against it?
The purpose of this film is to especially inform the Christian community about the beliefs of certain historic figures, so that we as Christians and patriots, can rightly defend our national heritage with our eyes more fully open to the truth, and able to defend it without apology. We highly recommend viewing this film, along with our with our follow up documentary, THE TRUE CHRISTIAN HISTORY OF AMERICA, for a balanced perspective.
